Money Is Energy. So Why Is It So Hard for Spiritual People to Receive?
Oct 17, 2026"Money is a frequency and it is beautiful."
I said that on the podcast and I meant every word. Money is energy. Spiritually, it is no different from the energy you feel in a reading, in a hug, in a room that lifts when the right person walks in. And yet so many gifted, heart led people I meet are tied in knots around it.
I know that knot. Before I woke up to my gifts at 33, I was a hairdresser in a small New Zealand town. "I used to live wage check to wage check and there was nothing left at the end of the day." I loved my clients. I loved serving. And somewhere deep down I believed that being a good person and having money were two different roads.
They are not. Let me show you what I mean.
Is Money Spiritual? What I Mean When I Say Money Is Energy
Here is the myth: spiritual people are meant to go without. The more you give away, the holier you are.
Here is the truth: money is simply the exchange we are using right now. It keeps the lights on. It keeps the children fed. When I look around my home, nearly everything I touch came through that exchange: "the electricity, the petrol in my car, the food that I get from the supermarket, the clothes that I wear."
Ordinary things. Cosmic energy underneath them.
On the podcast I put it as plainly as I could:
"Money is energy and I am energy. So therefore I am money."
That line makes people squirm. Sit with it anyway. If you are energy, and money is energy, then money is not something outside your spirituality. It lives in the same field you already work in every time you feel, notice and sense.
I talked about this with Tiffany Cheung on the podcast, and she said something I want you to hear:
"Money gets to be a neutral resource, it doesn't have to be good or bad."
Neutral. Not holy. Not dirty. Just energy, waiting to see what you will make it mean.
Where Money Shame Begins
Most of us learned what money means long before we ever earned any.
When I was little, I asked Mum how much our van cost. I was simply curious. I liked money and I liked knowing what things cost. The answer came straight back:
"We don't ask questions like that, Victoria. It's rude."
The lesson landed. Money is something we hush.
I also remember being eight years old at the swimming pools with a friend whose family had plenty, and having to ask for money because I had none. I can still feel the heat of that embarrassment in my body. Nobody did anything wrong. My parents are amazing, hard working people. But a little girl decided something about money that day, and that decision came with me into adulthood.
Here is the thing about money shame. It comes from both sides.
"There's shame and guilt for having money or shame and guilt for not having money. Wherever you turn, there's a shame and guilt."
Tiffany named the sneakiest version of it, the one I see in so many spiritual women:
"Too much of it means I'm too greedy and a bad person. So I'm just going to make sure I perpetually have not enough of it because that makes me feel like I'm a good person."
That is not humility. That is an old story wearing a halo. As I have said for a long time now, "the witch wound has to go." Whether it lives in your family line or simply in the things you heard at the dinner table, it is allowed to be seen, felt and released.
Why Receiving Feels So Uncomfortable
Wanting money is easy. Receiving it is the stretch.
When Tiffany and I compared our stories, we both came back to the same truth. Money came as a byproduct of doing the work we love. But that was only half of it. "We had to learn to receive the money. We had to learn to receive it."
There is a little exercise I do with people. I ask them to imagine they have just won a huge amount of money, and I ask them to feel it in their body. Is it expansive or contracted? At first, almost everyone lights up. Then I keep raising the amount and asking what they would do with it.
"Within three or four minutes, people start shrinking because the stress of what they do with the money and all the people around them starts coming in and they can't hold it."
That shrinking is the real conversation. Not the bank balance. The capacity to hold.
Even my husband once told me he didn't want to make too much money, because he didn't want to feel separate from the people he loves. A beautiful heart, and a money limitation sitting right inside it. We all have them.
And then there is grasping, which looks like wanting but feels like lack. "If we're extremely money focused, then quite often we are in lack because we're trying to get something that we don't have." Chasing is not the same as receiving. Your body knows the difference before your mind does.
Money Is a Relationship
I talked about this on the podcast in an episode about pleasure and money, and the heart of it was simple: money is a relationship.
A client once told me her money kept coming and going. There one month, gone the next. So I asked her to picture a partner who stayed for two weeks, vanished for three, came back for a year, then left again without a word. She would hold a higher standard. Of course she would.
"So why do we hold such low standards when it comes to money?"
Tiffany sees it the same way: "I see money as a mirror and money reflects." What shows up in your bank account often reflects the stories you carry about worth, safety and love.
So here is a tender invitation. "Maybe I need to write a letter and forgive money." I did exactly that once. It was not a polite letter. It was an honest one. And something softened in me once I let it all out onto the page.
How to Begin Opening to Receive
This is not a formula. It is a practice, and like any practice it deepens the more you return to it. Here are three places I start.
Feel, don't chase. Joy is a receiving state. As I said on the podcast, "the more that you're in joy, the more that you're in pleasure, the more you are receptive." That pleasure can be beautifully ordinary: a hot shower, a swim in the sea, a meal you savour, a long hug with your kids. Notice what lights you up and let yourself have more of it.
Look under the hood. Grab a notebook. What did Mum believe about money? What did Dad believe? What did the world around you say? You may find you have been living by rules you never chose.
Let your worth stand on its own. One of the truest things I know is that your worth has nothing to do with your bank account. I said it on the podcast about the gifted, sensitive souls I meet: "their worthiness had nothing to do with their bank account." Your gifts were here before any money was, and they will be here long after.
My own money story is mine. I share it because I remember how alone I felt, sitting with my budget every week and wondering why I couldn't seem to receive. What I can tell you is what I came to believe:
"Money is always available. It is always everywhere."
So I will leave you with the question I ask myself whenever money feels tight or heavy: what else is possible?
Feel into it. Take what resonates. And if you would like to hear these conversations in full, the episodes are below.

Your gifts aren't blocked. You may just be overriding them.
