To Know Spirit Is to Know Yourself: The Foundation of Mediumship Development
Mar 24, 2026Write this somewhere you will see it.
To know Spirit is to know yourself.
Not as a metaphor. As a practical, lived truth. This is the foundation of everything I teach, and it is the principle I return to again and again throughout this work — because everything else in this path, every block, every breakthrough, every piece of development work, traces back to it.
The more you know yourself — your wounds, your gifts, your body, your history, your conditioning — the clearer your channel to Spirit becomes. These are not two separate projects. They are the same project. The clearing and the development are the same journey.
Why Self-Knowledge Opens the Channel
Here is the mechanism, as practically as I can describe it.
When you do not know yourself — when you have unprocessed wounds that you have not looked at, when you carry conditioning you have not yet examined, when your own interior landscape is unfamiliar or frightening territory — the channel to Spirit is full of interference. Not because Spirit cannot reach you. Because you cannot reliably tell the difference between what is arriving from Spirit and what is arriving from your own unexamined material.
Your fears, your projections, your inherited beliefs, your unhealed wounds — all of these produce a kind of noise. And in that noise, genuine signal is difficult to distinguish. The practitioner who has done little inner work will often receive information that is heavily shaped by their own filters — their desires, their anxieties, their unconscious material — without realising that is what is happening. They will mistake their own fear for received information, or their own wishes for Spirit confirmation.
The practitioner who has done significant inner work has a clearer channel. Not because they have become perfect, but because they have learned the particular texture of their own material. They know what their own fear sounds like. They know what their own wishful thinking produces. They know the landscape of their own interior well enough to recognise when something is arriving from a direction that is genuinely not them.
This is why genuine mediumship development cannot be separated from personal development. They are not competing projects. They reinforce each other at every level.
The Work Is Both Things at Once
When I began this journey — a hairdresser in New Zealand, waking at 3am unable to sleep, with songs looping in my head and a dead girl trying to reach her mother through me and absolutely no framework for any of it — the work that opened my channel was not primarily meditation or practice circles or development techniques. It was the work of becoming more myself.
The wound I had to heal first was the one that said: who are you to claim this? The conditioning I had to examine first was the one that said: your knowing is dangerous, your sensitivity is a problem, keep it small and quiet and hidden. The belief I had to dismantle first was the one that said: this is not for someone like you.
Those are not spiritual development questions. Those are personal development questions. But working through them cleared the channel in a way that no amount of technical practice would have done, because what was blocking the channel was not a lack of skill. It was a belief system. A set of inherited convictions about what kind of person gets to have gifts and whether I was that person.
The clearing and the development are the same journey. Write it somewhere. You will come back to it.
This Is Not Just About Mediumship
I want to be clear about something. The work I am describing here is not only for people who want to become professional psychic mediums. Ninety percent of the people who have come to work with me did not arrive wanting to do readings for strangers. They wanted something more fundamental: to understand what was happening to them. To stop feeling so porous and exhausted. To trust their own perception. To know themselves more completely. To feel less alone in the particular kind of sensitivity they had been carrying their whole lives.
The tools in this work serve all of those purposes. The grounding practices change how you move through the world whether or not you ever sit with a client. The inner child work releases blocks that were limiting you long before you had any interest in mediumship. The ability to distinguish your own thoughts from absorbed material is a life skill, not a professional qualification.
And the confidence that comes from understanding your own channel — your own gifts, your own perceptions as real and legitimate and worth trusting — changes everything. In your relationships, in your work, in your sense of who you are and what you are capable of.
Where the Work Actually Begins
The question that opens everything is this: where have I learned that my knowing is not trustworthy?
For most of the women I work with, the answer lives somewhere in childhood. A moment, or a series of moments, in which something they perceived was dismissed, corrected, or punished. In which the reliable knowing they arrived with was taught, gradually and persistently, to distrust itself. In which the gifts that were natural and ordinary became something to hide.
The development work does not begin at the level of technique. It begins at the level of that original dismissal. It begins with the question: whose voice is it that says I cannot trust what I know? And what would it take to return that voice to the person it belongs to?
When you can answer those questions with some clarity — when you can stand inside your own perception without the constant interference of an inherited voice telling you it isn't real — the channel opens. Not because you have acquired a new skill. Because you have removed the thing that was in the way of what was always already there.
To know Spirit is to know yourself. The two paths are the same path. And the place to begin is wherever you are.
