Which Human Design Type Are You, and Why It Matters for Your Gifts

Oct 17, 2026

"I went to bed crying when I found out I was a projector. Because I was like, how am I going to fit in?"

That was me, the night I first read my human design chart.

I had been a hairdresser for most of my working life. First one in, last one out, then home to the couch, completely spent. I thought I just needed to try harder. It turns out I had been trying to live someone else's design.

So let's talk about the five human design types, what each one is here to do, and why knowing yours changes the way you receive your gifts. I'm not a human design reader, and I won't pretend to be. I've learned from people who live and breathe it, and three of them have sat with me on the podcast: Keri Bainborough, Siobhan Marie and Tresa Rivera. Their wisdom runs all through this.

What human design actually shows you

Here's the myth. There is one right way to work, rest, decide and succeed, and if it isn't working for you, you need more discipline.

Here's the truth, in Keri's words:

"The truth is, we can't all be put into one box. We are all different."

Your chart comes from your birth date, time and place, and you can pull it for free online. Start with three things. Your type, which is how your energy moves. Your strategy, which is how opportunities find you. Your authority, which is how your body makes a decision.

Tresa put it so simply when she came on the show. Human design is "the science of differentiation." I love that, because it gives you permission to stop copying everyone around you.

The five human design types at a glance

Keri walked us through all five in our episode together, and this is the heart of what she shared.

Generators. These are the sacral beings, the energy creators. Their strategy is to respond to what shows up in front of them, and their body tells them yes or no through that gut feeling. When they love what they're doing, they feel satisfaction. When they're living by everyone else's expectations, they feel frustration. Keri's advice for them is simple: "So do away with the shoulds. Listen to the gut feeling."

Manifesting Generators. Keri is one, and she calls them the speedy little creators. They have the sacral energy of the Generator plus the impulse to start things. They respond, and they also inform the people around them. They master things quickly, get bored quickly and pivot often, and Keri says it's super important that "manifesting generators reserve the right to change their minds in life."

Manifestors. Keri says they are only about 8% of the population. They are the initiators, the trailblazers, the ones who can wake up with an idea and simply begin. Their strategy is to inform, to let people know what they're doing before they do it. Their signature feeling is peace, and their not self feeling is anger.

Projectors. About 20% of us, according to Keri. Projectors are the guides. They see what others can't see, but their wisdom lands best when it's invited. Their strategy is to wait for the invitation and the recognition. Their signature is success, and their not self is bitterness. Keri's image for projectors has stayed with me ever since:

"Projectors really need to be like the lighthouse, shining their lights, sharing what they're doing."

Reflectors. The rarest type, less than 1% of people. Every centre in their chart is open, so they mirror the health of the people and the places around them. Their strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle, around 28 days, before making a big decision. Their signature is surprise, and their not self is disappointment.

Why your type matters for your gifts

Here's what I didn't understand for most of my life. I am a projector with splenic authority. I would go, go, go, then collapse, and wonder why I couldn't keep up with everyone else.

"I don't have a motor. So when I'm saying to people, hey, you know, I come across as extremely energetic and vibrant and potent and powerful, but when I'm not on, I'm literally the opposite."

When I'm not on, you'll find me in the bath, walking with my sisters, out in nature. That isn't laziness. That's how I refill.

And this is where it touches your gifts. Your intuition speaks through your body. A nudge. A knowing. A feeling in your chest or your gut. If you're running on borrowed energy all day, you can't feel the subtle. You're too busy pushing.

Tresa said something on the podcast that I want every intuitive to hear:

"Strategy and authority, it is a way to take the decision-making process away from the mind and give it back to the body."

My splenic authority is instant. It's a quiet hit in the moment, a yes or a no. As I said to Tresa, "I don't even need to think when I'm deciding things." That is the same quiet voice I've learned to trust with spirit. Not loud. Not logical. Just clear, if I'm still enough to feel it.

Your authority may work differently. A Generator feels it in the gut. Someone with emotional authority needs to ride their wave and wait for clarity. The point isn't to be like me. The point is to know how your own body says yes.

Your not self theme is a signpost, not a failure

Every type has a feeling that tells you you're off track. Frustration, anger, bitterness, disappointment. For years I thought those feelings meant I was doing life wrong.

Now I see them differently. When I was talking with Tresa about a day where I had completely overgiven, I said:

"The bitterness isn't actually like unaligned. It's like a signpost. It's a navigator."

Tresa agreed, and told me that's exactly the word used for it: "think about the true self theme and the not self theme like signposts." She also prefers the word appreciation over success for projectors, because when we are truly seen and heard, we feel appreciated. That one landed for me.

Siobhan, who mentored me through so much of this, says the same thing in her own way. People come to a reading asking to be told how to be. Her answer:

"I don't have to, you're already being who you are. The problem is you're shaming yourself about it."

She often repeats something her own mentor, Karen Curry Parker, taught her: "people are not formulas." Your chart is a map, not a cage.

How to start living your human design type

Keep it simple. You don't need to learn every gate and channel. Siobhan's suggestion is to learn your type, strategy and authority, then commit to six weeks of the experiment and notice what happens.

Here's how I'd begin:

First, pull your chart and find your type, strategy and authority.

Second, notice your not self feeling when it shows up. Don't judge it. Just ask, where did I override myself today?

Third, practice one small decision a day with your authority instead of your head. What to eat. Whether to say yes to that coffee. Feel for the answer in your body.

And be kind to the process. Tresa reminded us, "We will never be fully deconditioned." I'm always working on this. Some days I still try to be a Generator, and my body lets me know.

You were born with gifts, and you were born with a design that knows how to carry them. When you stop overriding it, what you feel gets clearer.

So tell me, which human design type are you? And what is your body trying to tell you?

Your gifts aren't blocked. You may just be overriding them.

In my free masterclass, The Mediumship Frequency, I'll show you why the message gets messy on the way through, and the sixty second practice that changes it. Watch it tonight, as often as you like.
